Phinney Wins Fifth Stage of International
Davis Phinney capitalized on the poor strategy of West Germany’s Roland Gunther with two turns remaining and cruised to an easy victory Friday night in the Old Sacramento Twilight Criterium, the fifth stage of the Coors International bicycle race.
Phinney, 29, from Boulder, Colo., was timed in 1 hour 15 minutes 20 seconds on the cobblestone-lined course. It was his third victory in the stage in the last four years.
Pre-race favorite and overall leader Andrew Hampsten, 26, of Boulder, Colo., finished fifth in the fifth stage and 22nd in the 105-mile Sonoma to Sacramento Road Race fourth stage earlier Friday. He increased his overall margin from one second entering the day to 35 seconds over teammate Alex Stieda.
