Rescuers Sent to Aid 17 Stranded Hikers

Seventeen hikers were stranded late Saturday on a ridge in Angeles National Forest near Big Tujunga Dam and a rescue team from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to retrieve them, authorities said.

Deputy Bill Wehner said the group included 12 men and boys and 5 women and girls, ranging in age from 10 to 50. They stopped walking when night fell because of treacherous footing.

“They apparently felt it was unsafe, so they used their flashlights to signal a U.S. Forestry barracks,” Wehner said.
