Pilgrims, many of them handicapped, gathered at a Roman Catholic church in Lubbock, Tex., to wait for a miracle during a weekend of worship in honor of the Virgin Mary. Attention has been focused on St. John Neumann Church since three parishioners began claiming they were receiving messages of peace and hope from Mary during weekly recitations of the rosary, including promises of miracles of physical and spiritual healing that would occur on Monday’s Feast of the Assumption, the day Catholics celebrate Mary’s ascension into heaven. Church officials said they expect as many as 20,000 people will attend the Monday service.
