Local News in Brief : False Report of Sniper

Monday morning rush-hour traffic was snarled for a time in downtown Los Angeles as police went to the Hyatt Regency Hotel to investigate what turned out to be false reports of a possible sniper firing from the 11th floor.
As Hope Street was shut between 7th and 8th Streets, officers went from room to room on the east side of the hotel, but could find no gunman. They finally concluded that the report was caused by repeated loud noises from a nearby construction project--possibly the Metro Rail.
“It turned out to be a big nothing,” said Sgt. Charles Mealey of Central Division Police Station.
