Pasadena : Pilot Garbage Program
The city will begin a pilot curb-side trash collection program for about 3,000 homes on Oct. 3 in an effort to reduce garbage collection costs.
Homeowners in the test areas will be given a 100-gallon garbage can mounted on wheels. The can holds the same amount as three to four regular-size garbage cans.
The cans are designed to be picked up by a specially equipped truck. The new routes will require only one person to handle garbage collection. Each garbage route in the city now requires four people.
The city has given homeowners in the test areas the option of moving their trash to the curb themselves each week or having city workers doing it for them. Those who move the trash themselves will save $6 a month on their trash bill.
The test is scheduled to continue for one year, after which the Board of Directors will decide whether the program should be expanded to include the entire city.
If the program is implemented citywide, the city estimates it would save $1.7 million a year.
The city said no jobs will be lost because the program would be phased in over several years and normal attrition would take care of the excess employees.
