Jack Nicklaus and Paul Azinger made it through the first round of the $1.1-million International tournament, and Mike Reid won $10,000 with the best score of the day Wednesday.

Reid shot a 5-under-par 67 over the Castle Pines Golf Club course, or a score of 11 points. The International is played under a modified Stableford scoring system in which the players earn five points for an eagle and two for a birdie. One point is taken away for a bogey and three for a double-bogey or worse.

Thirty-nine of the 81 players who took part in the first half of the first round Wednesday advanced to Friday’s second round. Another 81 players will compete today, including PGA champion Jeff Sluman.

The field is trimmed each day, with the survivors starting even on each round. There will be 18 players competing Sunday for $750,000, with the winner earning $180,000.

Nicklaus, who designed the Castle Pines course, advanced to Friday’s round with three points on a round of 70. Azinger, who had the third-round lead in the PGA last week before falling to Sluman, also moved on with three points.

Other noteable survivors were Tom Kite, Isao Aoki, Raymond Floyd, Nick Price, Andy Bean and Fuzzy Zoeller, who made an eagle at the par-5 17th hole to make the cut.
