Sewage Spills Over Beach in La Jolla
A sewer main break at a pump station in La Jolla sent raw sewage flowing across a residential street and into the ocean south of Windansea Beach for more than three hours Thursday afternoon.
The leak started around 3:30 p.m. in the 5900 block of Camino de la Costa, when a major pipe leading away from the pump station broke, a county health department spokeswoman said.
About 12,000 gallons of sewage ran into a storm drain, then down a rocky bluff and into the water before the leak was stopped at 7 p.m., according to Yvonne Rehg of the city Water Utilities Department.
Health officials posted quarantine signs for 100 yards on either side of the spill, which will remain in place until testing of the water shows there is no danger of contamination to swimmers, Rehg said.
