Democratic vice presidential nominee Lloyd Bentsen said today that the Republicans put on a convention for the far right in New Orleans, “a Mardi Gras for the Moral Majority.”

“The hard right drove the Republican agenda,” Sen. Bentsen told a news conference as he neared the end of a nine-day campaign trip to his home state, where he planned to welcome running mate Michael S. Dukakis tonight to the Texas hustings.

Bentsen began the day by contrasting his running mate with the opposition ticket of Vice President George Bush and Sen. Dan Quayle of Indiana.

“Mike Dukakis has reached out to the center and he is saying to Democrats who voted for Ronald Reagan, ‘Come home,’ ” Bentsen said in an interview on ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America.”

Dukakis and Bentsen arranged to meet here tonight for a fund-raiser and then visit the LBJ Ranch and President Lyndon B. Johnson’s widow, Lady Bird, on Saturday. The joint appearances are designed to underline the importance Democrats place on the Lone Star State, which Bush also claims as home.
