Norwegian divers have recovered a haul of valuable silver coins from the sailing ship Sampson, which sank off southern Norway more than 200 years ago, coin experts said Thursday.

The Norwegian and Danish coins, which date from as early as the 1630s, could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Divers recovered the 3,000 coins off Kristiansand three weeks ago. The total weight is about 45 pounds.

The Sampson sank in a storm in 1786 while carrying a cargo of brandy from the West Indies, destined for Christmas celebrations in Kristiansand.
