Local News in Brief : Pair Freed in Missing Millionairess Case
Two Los Angeles women arrested in the disappearance of millionairess Jean Fay Drexler were released from custody Friday after the district attorney’s office decided not to file charges against them, at least temporarily.
District attorney’s spokesman Al Albergate said prosecutors need more time to talk to Drexler, 74, and other witnesses before finally determining whether Lillian Kahn, 50, and her daughter, Cynthia Deaver, 18, should be charged.
“We think it’s going to take us a week or longer,” Albergate said.
The two women were arrested Tuesday at a West Hollywood hotel, the day before Drexler was found by neighbors walking unharmed on the street near her Hollywood Hills home. They were booked at Van Nuys Division jail for investigation of kidnaping for extortion.
Since she was located, Drexler has been under the supervision of the public guardian’s office, which was appointed earlier this year to protect the woman and her estimated $2-million estate.
Drexler is staying in a private residence in Los Angeles, Albergate said.
