Rick Mears took the top qualifying spot for the Quaker State 500 and became the first driver to sweep the pole positions for the three 500-mile Indy-car races.
Mears, who won the poles for the Indianapolis 500 and the Marlboro 500 at Michigan International Raceway earlier this year, earned the No. 1 position for Sunday’s race at Pocono International Raceway with a lap of 204.564 m.p.h.
Mears easily beat Penske Racing teammate Danny Sullivan, who had a lap time of 203.358. Bobby Rahal took the other spot on the front row with a lap of 202.520.
