Carter Reportedly Met With PLO Aide

Former President Jimmy Carter met in Cairo with a senior official of the Palestine Liberation Organization, an Egyptian Foreign Ministry official and a PLO source said Saturday.

The sources, speaking on condition they not be identified, said Carter met for two hours Friday with Hani Hassan, political adviser to PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat.

Carter flew to London on Saturday. He is scheduled to return to the United States today.

The Cairo sources said Carter and Hassan had an “extensive review” of Palestinian issues.

The United States government prohibits its officials from dealing directly with the PLO. The restriction has been in effect since 1975 with successive U.S. administrations--including Carter’s--insisting that the PLO must renounce violence and recognize Israel’s right to exist before direct talks can be held.
