American Indians gathered at Refugio Beach State Park near Santa Barbara for a “spiritual walk” to the gate of President Reagan’s ranch after learning that he will meet with Indian leaders, probably in September. About 100 people assembled at the beach under sponsorship of the American Indian Action Group, and about 20 signed up for the 7-mile walk to the gate of the President’s Rancho del Cielo. Michael Zarate, a leader of the organization, said the walk “is not a protest march.” An announcement of the walk had referred to it as a protest against Reagan’s remarks at the Moscow summit in May, when he said: “Maybe we should not have humored them in wanting to stay in that kind of primitive life style.”
