Bill Elliott won the pole position for today’s NASCAR Champion 400 race at Brooklyn, Mich., qualifying his Ford Thunderbird at 174.940 m.p.h., more than 2 m.p.h. faster than the track record he set two months ago.
Nine other drivers also broke Elliott’s old record of 172.687, and all 40 cars for the race exceeded 170, making it the fastest stock car field ever at Michigan International Speedway.
Geoff Bodine was second at 174.381, followed by Ken Schrader (174.355) and last year’s pole winner Davey Allison (174.157).
