Midget Yachts Start Competition Today

Thirty-three Midget Ocean Racing Class (MORC) yachts begin competition today in the international championship for the class at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club.
The MORC is composed of sailing craft 30 feet and under and is one of the fastest growing and most popular classes in the world. Despite their diminutive size, they are high-tech sailing machines, created by some of the top naval architects and yacht designers. They compete under their own complicated rating rules.
Top Southern California MORC designers are Alan V. Andrews of Newport Beach, Nelson and Merrick of San Diego and Doug Peterson, also of San Diego.
Besides the United States entries, of which most are from the West Coast, there are also entries from Canada and Japan.
The regatta will be scored on the best four of five races, which continue daily through Friday. General chairman of the regatta is Bill Crispin.
Racing will be over ocean courses laid out between the Newport and Huntington Beach Piers. There will be four around-the-buoys races and one distance race of approximately 50 miles, starting at noon each day.
