The parents of a missing Pacific Beach girl learned Monday that their daughter never went to Mexico with a neighboring family, as was previously thought possible.

The Gomez family telephoned the parents of 7-year-old Charitie Careins to tell them that they have no knowledge of the girl’s whereabouts, police spokesman Dave Cohen said.

Charitie has been missing since Aug. 5, when she left a friend’s house just blocks from her home on the last day of summer classes at Bayview Terrace Elementary School.

Police searched the neighborhood Aug. 6, and then the girl’s mother, Jane Lewis, recalled giving Charitie permission a few weeks earlier to go to Mexico with the Gomezes.

The family was out of touch for two weeks somewhere in Mexico, possibly because of storms, Cohen said, adding that the Gomezes said they had no intention of taking Charitie with them.

Cohen said police are still seeking leads in the case and will meet with Crime Stoppers and Charitie’s family this morning.
