The Des Moines Register called today for the removal of Dan Quayle as Republican George Bush’s running mate.

The influential Farm Belt paper is believed to be the first major U.S. newspaper to call upon the vice president to drop Quayle following allegations that he used his family’s influence to get him into the Indiana National Guard during the Vietnam War. In its lead editorial, the politically independent paper said: “If he remains on the GOP ticket, Dan Quayle will be a distraction on the issues throughout the campaign for the presidency.”
