A jailed American woman was cleared of terrorism charges and ordered released by a high court in Peru’s troubled Ayacucho province, judicial sources reported. Cynthia Stowell McNamara, 40, an anthropologist from Philadelphia, was originally arrested in Ayacucho, cradle of the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) rebel movement, and charged with leading a guerrilla attack that killed two Peruvian officials a year ago. These charges were dropped and she was released from prison in May, but she was rearrested Aug. 3 on orders of an Ayacucho judge. Now, according to judicial sources, she is expected to be freed.
