The Rams released 11 players and put 4 others on injured reserve in preparation for today’s mandatory cut to 60 players.

Released were 1988 draft picks Jeff Knapton of Wyoming, a sixth-round defensive end; Pat Foster of Montana, a ninth-round defensive end; and Jeff Beathard of Southern Oregon State, a 12th-round running back. David Smith, a linebacker/end from Northern Arizona who was taken in the 10th round last year, also was waived.

Other rookies who went on waivers included Dean Athanasia, a tight end from Yale; Kevin Brown, a punter from West Texas State; Chris Mendonca, a quarterback from Utah; Craig Richardson, a wide receiver from Eastern Washington; Randy Tanner, a wide receiver from USC; Joe Terry, a linebacker from Texas El Paso; and Chris White, a kicker from Illinois.

Jeff Walker, a second-year tackle, was the only veteran put on injured reserve who figured to have a shot at making the team. Acquired from the San Diego Chargers last year, Walker suffered a broken leg early in camp.

Also put on injured reserve were wide receiver Rey Nicholas, who has a knee injury; linebacker James Seawright, who has a shoulder injury; and center Navy Tuiasosopo, who has an ankle injury.

The Rams have 64 players in camp, 65 on the roster counting holdout guard Tom Newberry.
