Dana Hills Player Upsets Top-Seeded Veteran in Tennis

Doug Whitfield of Dana Hills upset top-seeded Friedrich Klein of Gladwyne, Pa., 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, Wednesday in the third round of the men’s 70-and-over division of the International Tennis Federation Veteran Championships at the Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Tony Prodan of Irvine defeated Burleigh Carpenter of Santa Monica, 6-4, 6-0, but William Hussey of Laguna Hills lost to Gardnar Mulloy of Miami, 6-4, 6-3, also in the 70-and-over division.

Betsy Roberts of Santa Monica upset Jane Crofford of Nashville, Tenn., the top-seeded player in the women’s 50-and-over division, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.

Play continues in all divisions at 10 a.m. today at Los Caballeros and at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach. Competition in nine divisions for men and women from 35-and-over to 70-and-over will conclude Sunday at Lindborg.
