Contract talks between ailing Pan Am Corp. and its flight attendants union are at an impasse, and the airline is seeking federal mediation, according to company and union representatives. No new talks are scheduled, but Pan Am spokesman Alan Loflin said the National Mediation Board has been asked to appoint a mediator. Pan Am has been seeking $90 million in wage reductions over three years from the Independent Union of Flight Attendants. The union has proposed smaller cuts, according to union spokeswoman Lois Schneider. The flight attendants’ contract expires Wednesday. Under federal labor rules, the union could strike at the end of a 30-day “cooling-off” period following formal declaration of an impasse by the mediator.
