Fountain Valley police and firefighters pulled the body of a 22-year-old man from the bottom of North Lake in Mile Square Park Thursday evening.

The man, who has not been identified, was with a group of friends at the park who decided to go swimming, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Larry Richey.

The county has jurisdiction inside the regional park, but Richey said two Fountain Valley police officers were the first on the scene in response to 911 calls reporting a possible drowning.

Fountain Valley Police Lt. Bob Mosley said Officer Leslie Roberts and Reserve Officer John Ibarra dove, fully clothed, into the water in the area where the victim’s friends said he was last seen. With the assistance of Fountain Valley firefighters, the man was pulled from the water, treated by paramedics and taken to the nearby Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
