Fan Likes Def Leppard, Not Review

I liked the concert, I think Def Leppard is still No. 1--and is going to stay there. What I didn’t like was the wishy-washy review (of the group’s concert at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre) by Steve Hochman (“Def Leppard Must Change to Keep Its No. 1 Spot,” Calendar, Aug. 22).

In his review, through which he had almost nothing positive to say, his attempts at insults were weak and without substance. The one thing that was clear was that he did not enjoy the show, but so what? Maybe his biased view was not the sole view to be seen because I know that I and many, many others who attended Saturday’s show had a wonderful time.

In this biased article, he remarks on “the anthemic posturing of such stompers as ‘Rock of Ages,’ ” then follows this with a statement concerning the lack of classics in Def Leppard’s concert. Has he forgotten that besides “Hysteria” and “Rock of Ages,” others such as “Photograph,” “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” and the rising number called “Love Bites” have all been hits? “Anthemic posturing”--give me a break!

As for his snide comments about Leppard’s one-armed drummer and his analogy to a drummer named Moulty that “anchored the Barbarians in the ‘60s,” it seemed cruel and ridiculously unnecessary.

Hochman’s review was one of the weakest and most ambiguous I have read in a long time. Maybe what your paper needs is a 15-year-old who at least has a better grasp on not only how to substantially insult someone, but when to do it.
