Reggie Jackson apparently gave New York lawyer Bill Goodstein permission to talk with Yankee owner George Steinbrenner about Jackson’s possible return for the rest of the season, but no deal seems likely.

According to two sources, Goodstein suggested the idea of a return to Jackson and offered to take the proposal to Steinbrenner. Jackson, intrigued, told Goodstein to go ahead.

A spokesman for Steinbrenner said Friday that Steinbrenner had not considered the proposal.

“George doesn’t want to see Reggie embarrassed in any way,” the spokesman said. “He wants Reggie to be remembered as the Hall of Famer he is and for the things he did for the Yankees.”
