Final ‘Last Temptations’
In Lawrence Christon’s article on “The Last Temptation of Christ,” he stated that “nothing in the Bible . . . contradicts what director Martin Scorsese struggles to explore about the nature of Christ,” and that the sex fantasy scene protests are missing the point (“ ‘Temptation’: Protest and the Pain Beneath,” Aug. 21).
I believe that Christon has missed the point.
The uproar over this movie is based on the direct contradictions it makes to the true Jesus Christ of the Bible, especially in the blasphemous dream sequence. In the Bible, Christ said that not only is the act of adultery sin, but also to lust after a woman in your heart is adultery (Matthew 5:27-28).
Since the movie shows Christ dreaming of adultery, it means the temptation gave way to sin in His heart. This is blasphemy because Hebrews 4:15 says, “For we do not have a high priest (Jesus) who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin .”
The point is that Jesus Christ went through temptation, but never sinned. He died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins.
