David Cone allowed one hit--a fourth-inning double by Tony Gwynn--and Gregg Jefferies doubled, tripled and homered to send the Mets to their sixth victory in seven games, 6-0, over the San Diego Padres Monday night at New York.

Cone (14-3) walked two and struck out eight in pitching the league’s ninth one-hitter. Cone pitched 7 perfect innings June 19 en route to a two-hitter against Philadelphia.

Jefferies, a 20-year-old considered one of the best prospects in baseball, was called up Saturday night and went 2 for 5 Sunday. He went 3 for 4 Monday, opening the scoring in the first by doubling and scoring on Darryl Strawberry’s single.

Jefferies opened the Mets’ two-run third with his first major league homer, a drive over the right-field wall. The lead went to 3-0 when Strawberry doubled and scored on Gary Carter’s single.

Keith Hernandez hit his eighth homer to give the Mets a 4-0 lead in the fifth. In the sixth, Mookie Wilson singled home a run off reliever David Leiper and Jefferies followed with a triple off the left-field wall to make it 6-0.

Rain delayed the first pitch 20 minutes, and the Padres played the game under protest because it started at 7:55 p.m., not the agreed upon 7:45.

Carter caught his 100th game of the season, giving him 12 straight seasons of 100 or more games at catcher.

Pittsburgh 8, Cincinnati 1--The Pirates remained 6 1/2 games behind the Mets in the East by breaking out of their scoring slump in the win at Cincinnati.

After scoring just 22 runs in the last 12 games, the Pirates batted around in the first inning against rookie Keith Brown (1-1), who lasted just one-third of an inning in his second major league start. Pittsburgh sent seven batters to the plate for two more runs in the second inning against Rob Dibble.

Dave LaPoint rode the lead to his third victory in three starts for the Pirates, overcoming several shaky innings. He allowed nine hits in seven innings but was bailed out by two double plays. Jeff Robinson pitched two hitless innings in relief.

St. Louis 3, Atlanta 2--Former Dodger Pedro Guerrero hit his first homer as a Cardinal, a three-run shot, to give St. Louis the victory at Atlanta.

The Cardinals trailed, 2-0, in the third against Rick Mahler (9-12). With two out, Vince Coleman and Ozzie Smith singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Guerrero, obtained Aug. 16 for pitcher John Tudor, hit a 2-and-1 pitch over the center-field fence for his sixth home run.

“It felt good,” Guerrero said. “I was beginning to wonder for a while if I would get one. I had been hitting the ball hard and far, but in the wrong ballparks. I guess I picked the right one.”

Guerrero, who raised his average to .310, has 12 game-winning hits, among the league leaders, despite missing nearly half the season with a pinched nerve in his neck.

Guerrero, who has played in 13 games for St. Louis, extended his hitting streak to eight games. He also had a double and has knocked in 10 runs for the Cardinals.

Chicago 2, Houston 1--Mitch Webster singled home pinch-runner Darrin Jackson with one out in the 11th inning at Houston to drop the Astros 6 1/2 games behind the Dodgers in the West and waste another strong effort by Nolan Ryan.

Ryan, who pitched 8 innings, allowed 5 hits and struck out 11, giving him a league-leading 196 strikeouts. The Astros have scored four runs in his last four starts, while Ryan has 36 strikeouts in 28 innings and 1 loss and 3 no decisions.

Philadelphia 3, San Francisco 0--The Phillies snapped a five-game losing streak and won for only the second time in 15 games as Shane Rawley allowed 4 hits in 6 innings at Philadelphia in his first start since coming off the disabled list.

The Giants have lost 5 of 6 and trail the Dodgers by 7 1/2 games.
