Cal Thornton has retired as president and editorial director of the Los Angeles Times-Washington Post News Service after a 40-year career in the industry. Thornton, 63, joined LAT-WP in 1977 as sales director. He was promoted to chief executive in 1978. Before joining LAT-WP, he had a 29-year career with United Press International in the Midwest and East including reporter, editor, division manager and marketing vice president. Thornton and his wife, Audrey, retired to their home on Wilbur Point in Fairhaven, Mass.
