Local News in Brief : Politics : Lenney Challenges Cox to Debate in 40th Race

Lida Lenney, the Democratic candidate in the heavily Republican 40th Congressional District, Tuesday challenged the GOP candidate, C. Christopher Cox of Newport Beach, to a debate.

“In the time-honored tradition of American politics, stretching back to the Lincoln/Douglas debates, I hereby challenge you to meet me in public debate,” Lenney said in a letter to Cox that she released to the press.

Lenney, of Laguna Beach, suggested that the League of Women Voters host the event.

Cox, who had not yet received the letter, said that during the primary campaign he and Lenney appeared several times at candidates’ forums at which issues were discussed. While declaring he had no objection to a debate, Cox said he felt it was “inappropriate” to respond to Lenney’s challenge until he had received her letter.
