To overcome what some women professors say is an obstacle in gaining tenure, the University of California will extend by one year the probationary period for faculty members raising young children. Under a new policy, women or men with primary responsibility for children under 5 will have nine years to produce research and publications in order to be considered for a lifelong teaching position at a UC campus. Women professors have complained that the burdens of child rearing prevent them from completing as much research as men and hurt them in the competition for tenure.
