WASHINGTON — Young workers this summer are experiencing the lowest unemployment rate since 1969, with a record 68.5% of the nation’s youths holding jobs.
The Labor Department said the unemployment rate among workers aged 16-24 was 10.9% in July, compared to 11.7% a year ago.
But all of the improvement was among whites; blacks did not share in any of it, the government said. Only about half of the nation’s black youths have jobs this summer, compared to three-fourths of white youths.
