Vietnam War Foes and Quayle’s Serving in the National Guard

Thanks for the excellent column by Del Olmo. I was a combat infantry soldier in World War II. Experiences in the war left me with a strong anti-war bias and great compassion for those who have recently made the personal sacrifices that our government imposed upon them, especially the Chicanos and others who were in no position to use the loopholes created to protect a privileged group.
Del Olmo said it perfectly when he said patriotism includes standing up for what you believe. Certainly people in a democratic society have a right to disagree or agree with established policy. However, the war taught me never to ask another man to do what I would be unwilling to do myself. Should he be elected, I hope Quayle will think about this.
