Water-Saving Efforts Begin
Water conservation efforts have begun in several San Gabriel Valley communities.
Citing the lack of rainfall contributing to a statewide water shortage, the Monterey Park City Council has unanimously approved a program of voluntary water conservation and urged residents to take steps to reduce their water use by 10%.
Nels Palm, the public works director, told the Monterey Park council that water consumption could be reduced by consumers more closely monitoring the watering of lawns and landscaping. The city’s water department, he said, will help customers detect and prevent leaks, and can provide water-saving devices upon request.
The Walnut Valley Water District, which serves Walnut, Rowland Heights, Diamond Bar and part of West Covina, is also offering free water conservation kits to customers.
The kits, available at the district office, 271 S. Brea Canyon Road, Walnut, contain a water-displacement bag for toilets, blue tablets to detect toilet leaks, washers to reduce water flow in showers and a brochure with water conservation tips.
The Walnut Valley board has passed a resolution calling for a voluntary 10% reduction in water use to safeguard water supplies.
