A former policeman convicted in a pension fund scandal surrendered Sunday, 25 hours after taking the man who exposed the scam hostage on the 15th floor of an office building, police said.

Anthony D. Daniele, armed with at least one handgun, released his hostage, John Frank, vice president of the city police board, about 1:30 a.m. Sunday and gave up 10 hours later.

On Friday, Daniele had been sentenced to eight years in prison and ordered to make restitution of $200,000 for his part in a kickback scandal that cost police and fire pension funds an estimated $333,000.
