Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : Newspaper Fire Ruins $100,000 in Newsprint
Arson was the suspected cause of a fire in the basement of the Orange County Register that destroyed more than $100,000 in newsprint, authorities said.
No one was reported injured in the 4:40 a.m. fire Sunday, and newspaper operations were not disrupted, said Tom Grochow, assistant to the Register’s general manager.
Fire investigators had not officially determined the cause of the blaze, but newspaper officials suspected arson.
A security guard saw two people near the scene and chased them out of the building and down a nearby street, but they escaped, Grochow said.
“We assume they had something to do with it,” he said.
The fire was the third at the plant in four years, all of them in the basement storage area, he said.
