Afghanistan and Pakistan are likely to become the biggest source of heroin for the United States as the Afghan conflict subsides, U.S. officials believe. Intelligence estimates are that nearly half of the heroin used by American addicts is refined from opium from the two Southwest Asian countries. Withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan probably will result in a boost in illegal opium production as thousands of returning refugees turn to it for a lucrative cash crop, officials of the Drug Enforcement Administration said.
