Fishing / Dan Stanton : Boats Continue to Score Healthy Catches Throughout Area

At Marina del Rey Sportfishing, the Happyman, fishing Santa Monica Bay, had a count of 100 sand bass, 40 bonito and 6 halibut. The Spitfire had 65 sand bass, 8 barracuda and 1 halibut.

At Redondo Sportfishing, the Blackjack hooked 200 bonito and 33 rock fish.

Sea Spray fished Rocky Point and anglers chalked up 211 bonito, 11 sculpin and 9 rock fish.

The Redondo Special fished the bay on a half-day trip Monday and anglers scored with 113 bonito, 27 sculpin and 1 halibut.

The Sharpshooter worked the Marineland area and anglers reeled in 80 bonito, 2 barracuda, 2 halibut and 100 sculpin.

The Isle of Redondo barge had a weekend catch of 765 bonito, 6 sharks, 955 mackerel and 28 rock fish.

At 22nd Street Landing, the First String with tanks of live squid fished Catalina and anglers reeled in 34 yellowtail and 70 calico bass.

The Monte Carlo morning trip to Horseshoe Kelp produced 8 yellowtail, 76 sculpin, 31 sand bass and 18 calico bass.

The Queen of the Sea headed to Catalina with live squid and anglers hooked up with 31 yellowtail.

L.A. Harbor Sportfishing: Outer Limits’ two-day trip caught the exotics, which included 37 yellowtail and 12 blue fish. All fish weighed 11 to 22 pounds.

The Sportking’s trip on Monday was productive when an invasion of Spanish jack resulted in a catch of 275 plus, 200 bonito and 70 barracuda.

The Matt Walsh fished the Rock Pile area and anglers reeled in 1 yellowtail, 126 sand bass and 9 rock fish.

Annie B Barge landed 1,101 mackerel, 300 herring, 12 sand bass, 13 sculpin and 3 halibut Monday.

Long Beach Sportfishing: The Victory fished the rigs and the Horseshoe. Anglers caught 327 sand bass, 31 calico bass, 61 rock fish and 1 halibut. On the Southern Cal afternoon trip, anglers caught 15 yellowtail, 25 calico bass and 18 rock fish.

Fishing Notes:

Prospects are bright for a fall run of surface game fish action for the “afishingnados” who go for yellowtail and white sea bass.

Boats that make midnight squid runs to Catalina have caught plenty of the favorite food of the exotics.

The Outerlimits from L.A. Harbor Sportfishing returned Monday from a two-day trip with 37 yellowtail and 12 bluefin tuna, all hooked on squid. All fish weighed in from 14 to 22 pounds.

Fishing exploded Monday when the Sportking stopped short of the oil rigs as schools of Spanish jack started chasing balls of bait. Anglers tossed squid and 275 were landed. This is the first time in several years that the jacks have been located in local areas.

The action spots for yellowtail are concentrated at Catalina, with some catches at the oil rigs and Rocky Point.

Three South Bay anglers who have albacore fever headed north to get into the action.

Jim Acosta caught the whopper, a 35-pounder. George Bogen of Marina del Rey caught a 30-pounder, and Ray Hawks of the Torrance Rod and Gun Club hooked and landed a 25 pounder on a jig.

The fishing for the longfins was on a one-day trip on the Admiral. Morro Bay landing spokesman Jack Ward said he could not send boats out for albacore over the weekend because of the weather and heavy seas.

A total of 36 albacore have been caught on two trips since longfins were found.

Frank Matsuhra of the King Harbor Marlin Club, fishing aboard the Rowenne II at Catalina, brought aboard a 114-pound marlin.

Yvonne Graham of Gardena, on the Watercloset south of Catalina, brought to gaff a 118-pound marlin in only 21 minutes.

Jim Lowerre of the Torrance Rod and Gun Club, fishing aboard the Prospector at Catalina, used a flying fish to catch a 111-pound marlin.

South Bay Catches:

Skyler Portir of San Pedro, fishing aboard the Queen of the Sea, hooked a 30-pound white sea bass while trying to catch yellowtail.

Chris Shea of Long Beach, aboard the Southern Cal, caught a stray chinnock salmon that topped the scales at 27 pounds.

Mark Sagha of Los Angeles, working Rocky Point aboard the Redondo Special, landed a 26-pound yellowtail using 12-pound test line.

Paul Bejinto of San Pedro, fishing aboard the Betty G at Catalina, reeled in a 23-pound yellowtail.

Al Scow of Rancho Palos Verdes, aboard the Outerlimits, stayed with a bluefin tuna for 23 minutes and brought to gaff the largest tuna caught on the two-day trip. It weighed 16 pounds, 4 ounces.
