Expect the Chargers to announce soon that they will hold “Dan Fouts Day” on Nov. 27 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

At that time they also will retire Fouts’ jersey No. 14. Only one other Charger--offensive lineman Ron Mix--has been similarly honored by the team. But the Chargers unretired Mix’s jersey number (74) the next year when Mix played for the Raiders.

Nov. 27 is the same day the Chargers play the 49ers. Fouts, now an analyst for CBS-TV, will probably be working that game for his network.

The Chargers and rookie linebacker Cedric Figaro now have the opinions of three physicians. But they haven’t been able to decide whether to operate on his back.

Charger Coach Al Saunders says he hopes there will be a decision, one way or another, “in the next couple of days.” Figaro is on injured reserve.

The Thursday injury report update for Sunday’s Chargers-Broncos game in Denver: Chargers: outside linebacker Billy Ray Smith (calf) doubtful; nose tackle Mike Charles (knee) questionable; defensive end Les Miller (ankle) questionable.

Broncos: guard Stefan Humphries (arm) injured reserve; tight end Clarence Kay (neck) doubtful; wide receiver Vance Johnson (shoulder) questionable; linebacker Rick Dennison (shoulder) questionable; quarterback John Elway (foot) probable; tight end Pat Kelly (hand) probable; safety Dennis Smith (arm) probable.

Third-string quarterback Mark Vlasic stayed after practice and worked on his passing when flushed from the pocket.

His practice receiver: offensive coordinator Jerry Rhome. Rhome’s hands were more impressive than his speed.
