No jail time was imposed Monday against one of the four people charged in a wild spending spree by student leaders at Grossmont College.
David Brooks, 19, the former executive secretary for the Associated Students of Grossmont College, has paid $8,500 back to the college--the amount both sides agree was his share of the $41,000 charged to a college credit card.
San Diego Superior Court Judge Herbert Exarhos ordered Brooks to perform 30 days of public service washing police cars or picking up trash on the freeway.
In a plea bargain, Exarhos reduced Brooks’ felony conviction to a misdemeanor. When he pleaded no contest to grand theft in July, he made an agreement with the prosecution that his conviction would be reduced to a misdemeanor if he paid the college back his share of the losses.
Exarhos said Brooks’ role was distinguished from the other co-defendants because of his age. “Of the charged defendants, he’s probably one of the least culpable,” said Deputy Dist. Atty. Sally Williams.
