Local News in Brief : U.S. Funds Will Be Used on Apartments

Share

Federal funds will be used to make repairs to about 1,000 dilapidated apartments under an agreement approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles City Council.

The council unanimously approved the agreement among the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the city’s Community Development Department and the Community Redevelopment Agency that will provide more than $5.8 million from HUD for rehabilitation of rental housing in the city.

Ralph Esparza, director of the housing division of the Community Development Department, said the highest priority will be given to buildings “where the owners can put up at least 50% of the cost of the work.” But part of the money will be used to repair some of the 9,000 units operated by the city’s Housing Authority, he said.

The city has received more than $13 million in similar HUD grants over the last four years.
