So far, “Good Morning, Vietnam” has weathered the storm of high-powered new rentals trying to blow it out of the No. 1 position on the Billboard magazine rental chart. “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” which quietly motored into the runner-up position, has proven to be a more formidable contender than expected. But “Moonstruck,” No. 3 in its second week on the chart, is probably the next No. 1 rental. One of the most potent newcomers is “Broadcast News,” which entered the chart at No. 11 and should beam into the Top 5 next week. “Best Seller,” the thriller starring James Woods as a polished hit man and Brian Dennehy as a Joseph Wambaugh-type author-cop, made a surprisingly strong debut at No. 16. “Good Morning, Vietnam” still heads the sales chart, which measures sales to retailers and distributors.

Rental Weeks Sales Top Ranking On Rental Chart Rentals Last Week Chart Ranking 1. “Good Morning, Vietnam” 1 6 1 (Touchstone) 2. “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” 4 3 27 (Paramount) 3. “Moonstruck” 29 2 16 (MGM/UA) 4. “Suspect” 2 7 -- (RCA/Columbia) 5. “Wall Street” 3 9 -- (CBS-Fox) * “The Last Emperor” -- 1 26 (Nelson Entertainment)

* This Oscar-winning epic, which debuted at No. 8, should be one of the most popular rentals during the next few months, signaling the success of Nelson Entertainment’s advertising/marketing strategy. The company’s goal was to wipe out that arty, film-buff stigma--a rental-market liability--which had been clinging to “Emperor,” nine Oscars or no.
