Local News in Brief : School Attendance of 22,484 Tops Estimates

Attendance at Glendale schools reached 22,484 Tuesday, surpassing district projections by 73 students after only four school days.

Officials said district facilities are adequate to handle the enrollment jump, which is 684 students over last year’s total.

“We believe at this point that we do have enough flexibility in our facilities to be able to handle the growth,” said Vic Palos, district spokesman.

District officials attributed the increase to the large number of Soviet Armenian immigrants enrolling in elementary and junior high schools.

Since a district center to ease the enrollment of immigrant students opened Aug. 29, it has processed between 300 and 350 students, Palos said.

More than half the new students are of Armenian descent, he said.

Toll and Wilson junior high schools and Columbus Elementary School--all in the south-central part of the district--have absorbed the bulk of the new students, Palos said.
