CAMPAIGN ’88 : Bentsen Sees Quayle’s Youth as Texas Issue

Share

Democratic vice presidential candidate Lloyd Bentsen renewed his offensive against his Republican counterpart, Sen. Dan Quayle, on Thursday, saying in Dallas that he expected Quayle’s youth and inexperience to become an important issue in the Texas campaign.

Bentsen, who is being counted on heavily by Democrats to win votes in Texas, is on the state’s ballot both as the incumbent senator and as the running mate of Democratic presidential nominee Michael S. Dukakis.

“People are looking at the vice presidency as an office that has increased (in) importance and influence,” Bentsen said. “I wouldn’t say that the junior senator from Indiana couldn’t grow into the job, but sometimes you don’t have time to do that.”
