William Braniff, a career federal prosecutor, was sworn in Friday as interim U. S. attorney for the Southern District of California.

Braniff, 47, succeeds Peter Nunez, who stepped down last month after six years as the district’s top federal prosecutor to join a law firm.

Whether Braniff will be nominated as a permanent replacement depends on the outcome of the November presidential election. Sen. Pete Wilson, a Republican, nominated Braniff for the interim post, and has indicated that, if Vice President George Bush is elected, Braniff is the probable candidate for the permanent position.
