Results of 11-Month Tactile Arts Course for Children on Display at Long Beach Nature Center

Share

What began in November of 1987 as a project for both visually impaired and sighted children comes to an artistic close today at El Dorado East Nature Center, 7550 E. Spring St., Long Beach.

The final products of the 11-month tactile-arts course will be on display, a grouping called “From the Woods to the Books” taught in the workshop of Pia Pizzo, artist-in-residence. The tactile works, in “book” form but designed for feeling as well as seeing, are the result of children’s experiencing the four seasons by using the senses of sound, smell, taste and touch as well as sight.

Sponsored by the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the city of Long Beach, the artworks will be on display from noon to 2 p.m. From 2 to 4, artist Pizzo will give a slide-illustrated lecture on the processes of the wards under her tutelage.
