The number of new AIDS cases in Los Angeles County rose to an all-time one-month high of 220 in August, according to county health department figures released Monday.

The increase was attributed to new computer-based data-gathering techniques that improved the logging of new cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

The number of new AIDS cases has been steadily rising since May, according to the Department of Health Services’s monthly statistics. There were 185 new cases reported in July, 22 more than in June.

As of Aug. 31, the cumulative total of documented AIDS cases in the county stood at 5,635, including 5,592 adults and 43 pediatric cases. The disease has killed 63% of that total, according to the report.

Homosexual and bisexual males were still the largest group at risk, accounting for 90% of all reported AIDS cases in the county, the report said.
