George McKenna, widely praised for his work as principal of Washington Preparatory High School in South Los Angeles, has agreed to become superintendent of the 15,000-student Inglewood Unified School District.

McKenna, 48, announced Tuesday that he has accepted the Inglewood school board’s offer of the superintendent’s job and signed a contract through the 1990-91 school year at a reported annual salary of $80,000.

Board members say they hope McKenna can turn around the predominantly black and Latino district, which has been plagued by fiscal crisis, political infighting and low test scores.
