A Costa Mesa man died Wednesday night after suffering violent convulsions in the custody of Orange County sheriff’s deputies, Sheriff’s Lt. Richard J. Olson said Thursday.

Daniel Howard Lanning, 33, was pronounced dead at 9:45 p.m. at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.

Lanning went into convulsions after he was screened by medical personnel at County Jail, where he was being booked on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance.

Lanning, a truck driver, was arrested after officers stopped him for a traffic violation near Newport Boulevard and Santa Isabel Drive in an unincorporated area near Costa Mesa, Olson said.

“The autopsy was inconclusive, and we’re awaiting toxicological testings,” Olson said. “They did find traces of plastic in his throat.”
