A Santa Ana man walking along the railroad tracks Thursday morning rescued a transient whose legs had been severed when he tried to jump off a freight train, police said.

The accident victim was identified as Jose Guerrero, 21, who was listed in serious condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange Thursday night.

Santa Ana resident David Duncan was walking along the railroad tracks near 1400 South Village Way about 6 a.m., when he noticed the 21-year-old Latino lying beside the tracks, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Rick Hicks reported.
