Doctor Says Ojeda’s Finger Improved After Pitcher Has Surgery in New York

Bob Ojeda’s nearly severed finger is showing improvement, and the New York Mets pitcher is resting comfortably, team doctor Jim Parkes said Thursday.

Ojeda is recovering at Roosevelt-St. Luke’s Hospital, where microsurgery was performed Wednesday after the left-hander accidentally cut the upper third of his left middle finger with a hedge trimmer.

“He seems to be in good spirits and his finger seems to be responding well,” Parkes said.

Gary Carter, Darryl Strawberry and Ron Darling were among several Mets who visited Ojeda Thursday.

Ojeda is expected to spend a few more days in the hospital. He will soon begin a 6-month rehabilitation process, and the Mets are hoping he will be able to pitch next season.
