This campaign for the presidency must be one of the most unenlightening in the history of the office. It is difficult to get anything of substance from the brief photo opportunities shown daily on TV.

However, Bush has presented the idea that United States armed forces should be used to protect American interests in other areas, e.g., Grenada, Lebanon, the Persian Gulf, Nicaragua, et al. He has left unanswered what the response of a Bush Administration would be if the need for armed forces arose and all of the young men of military age Quayled at the thought of such duty. Who could he then send?
